iPad wins hands-down here over the Surface RT, just like the MacBook Pro did over my Windows laptops. I haven't done a thorough job of tracking how long each battery lasts, but I have never, ever run out of battery on the iPad. Even when it gets really low, having it in "sleep" mode doesn't seem to draw the battery much lower. I just don't really have to think about battery life, at all. I plug it in once every few days and it's good.
In contrast, the Surface definitely drains the battery in sleep mode. There have been multiple times that I've put it to sleep with a low-ish battery and attempted to use it again a few hours later, only to discover that the battery is completely dead. I try to plug it in at least once every 1-2 days to prevent that from happening.
