MacBook Pro, day 2: Progress, sort of

I figured out that Option + up/down arrow works like Page Up/Down. Web browsing instantly became a million times easier.

I'm still struggling to remember my keyboard shortcuts. Mostly, I keep forgetting whether I want to use the Control, Option, or Command key for a given task. But I think it'll come with practice. Different PC manufacturers have different keyboard layouts, and I find it's really hard to switch between two different layouts, but once I get used to one layout, it's no problem. To that end, I am trying to minimize usage of my Windows laptops as laptops (as opposed to in a docking station with a full-size keyboard) while I'm trying out the MacBook, to hopefully reduce that learning curve.

I'm also struggling with the trackpad. There are a bunch of "gestures" that you can do -- tapping, swiping, etc. with one, two, three, or four fingers. And I can never remember what does what, and I end up accidentally doing one gesture when I meant to do another (like, I'll do the scrolling gesture, but it'll be interpreted as zooming), and it's just annoying. This screen shot shows just one of the three gesture configuration screens. Yeah. There are a lot of gestures.

Trackpad - More gestures

I finally managed to get Facebook to crash Safari, just like it loves to do to IE. Safari handled it better, though: Even though the Safari window itself wasn't responding, I was still able to get to the menus and exit Safari gracefully. IE usually stops responding completely and I have to kill it from Task Manager.

I've had the laptop unplugged most of the day, using it here and there, and it says it still has 5 hours of battery life left. Whoa! I've noticed that it seems to suspend almost immediately, after maybe 1-2 minutes of inactivity. But it resumes in an instant as well, so it's not a problem at all, and that must save quite a bit of battery life.
